Snow leopards are some of the most beautiful creatures out there. Snow leopards are typically 1.2-1.5 m(4-5 ft), with about a 91 cm (36 in) tail. Weighing around 27-54 kg (60-120 lbs). Overall, snow leopards tend to be about 2 m (6 ft). Their long tails help snow leopards keep their balance and agility. It also wraps itself around the dowsing creature as protection from the cold. There spotted coats are gorgeously patterned. Snow leopards are commonly hunted for their pelt. Despite being extremely illegal, most illegal poachers continue to break the laws.
Climate change is a very serious threat, causing the loss of 30% of the Himalayas, just one of the snow leopards habitats.
Snow leopards are predators, they hunt animals such as argali sheep, marmots, hares, etc. Argali sheep are commonly hunted for their meat, therefore causing a major drop in the Argali sheep population. Due to the sudden scarcity of their main prey, snow leopards have begun to prey on livestock such as cows, yak calves, and goats. This has caused some farmers to shoot snow leopard. Much of the snow leopards’ habitats have been destroyed by the hands of human settlements and grazing space. The WWF has done a lot with their projects: Conserving Snow Leopards, Securing Water Resources, and Benefiting Communities; Third Pole GeoLab; Human-Wildlife Conflict Mitigation Measures in Nepal.
The loss of livestock causes a lot of anger from human settlers towards the snow leopards. Yet the constant killing of snow leopards does nothing but diminish the population of the beautiful creatures. The Human-Wildlife Conflict Mitigation Measures in Nepal project is trying to find compromise with the human settlers, a way to let the settlers have their livestock in peace and preserve the snow leopard species. The project gets closer and closer to finding a solution every day.
The chance of saving this species is constantly dwindling. Every day at least one snow leopard is killed, whether it be a poachers or a farmers doing, it's still happening. Every day there is a new opportunity opening up for you to help them. Seize the opportunity, use your privilege to help this poor species before it is too late.
